British Airways reported a 20 percent reduction in February premium traffic versus a year earlier. Though the airline cited one less day in February 2009 than February 2008 and "a significant number of cancellations in the first week of the month due to heavy snowfall," non-premium traffic declined much less dramatically, 5.5 percent.

Delta Air Lines beginning in September plans to cut international capacity by "an additional 10 percent." In a memo to employees, CEO Richard Anderson and president Ed Bastian wrote that reductions would be targeted at markets seeing the greatest "revenue weakness," including transatlantic and transpacific routes. At the same time, Latin America capacity is expected to increase slightly.

The Institute of Travel Management appointed immediate past chairman Mark Avery to lead its Project Icarus as chairman, replacing former HSBC buyer Tony Pilcher. Avery is business services head at Icarus-accretided PricewaterhouseCoopers. "The project recently announced a complete overhaul of the tools it offers members and subscribers and it is focusing on increasing the number of companies committed to the project in 2009," ITM said.

Hilton Hotels is in "active development negotiations" in several cities for construction of its new Denizen Hotels brand. Targeting both corporate and leisure guests, Denizen "will cater to globally conscious modern travelers," according to Hilton. The company is eyeing development in Abu Dhabi, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Las Vegas, London, Miami, Montreal, Mumbai, New York, Panama City and Washington D.C.

Sabre Holdings said bookings in the first quarter were "holding stable" at roughly 15 percent down year over year. The Sabre global distribution system processed 383 million bookings last year--down 3 percent from 2007--and 76 million in the fourth quarter, down 15 percent year over year.

The worsening global economy continues to place additional pressure on the airline industry. In just the few months since we last announced capacity reductions, revenues have weakened, particularly in international markets. Once again, we must move quickly to adjust our capacity and stay in front of demand changes.
