Merger partners British Airways and Iberia have narrowed to 12 "like-minded airlines who believe that the future of the industry lies in consolidation," according to an industry publication quoting BA CEO Willie Walsh. "Becoming the biggest airline group in the world is not a bad ambition to have," TTG published, citing Walsh. The carriers with which BA and Iberia may consider combining include Air Berlin, Cathay Pacific, Gulf Air, Kingfisher, Lan and Qantas.

British Airways and India's Kingfisher Airlines on 15 September will begin sharing codes. First announced when the oneworld alliance in June formally invited Kingfisher to join, the cooperation will include 11 Kingfisher routes within India and one to Sri Lanka, and nine BA routes from London Heathrow to U.K. and Continental Europe cities.

Delta Air Lines applied to U.S. and European authorities for approval to operate daily roundtrip service from Boston and Miami to London Heathrow. According to Delta, "the slots for the new service are available following the U.S. and E.U. governments' approval of an immunized transatlantic alliance between American Airlines and British Airways."

Bankrupt Japan Airlines Group intends to retire 103 aircraft, "completely eliminate" unprofitable routes and cut about 16,000 employees, according to a reorganization plan submitted to Tokyo District Court. The international network would focus on "high-yield demand" to "major cities" in Asia, Europe and the United States. JAL in the domestic Japanese market plans to "maintain our network centering on Haneda Airport" with an emphasis on "more frequent service using smaller aircraft." Aircraft retirements would include "all" Boeing 747-400s, Airbus 300-600s, MD-81s and MD-90s. The company, which filed for bankruptcy in January, will seek court approval for its reorganization plan on 30 November.

Amadeus increased revenue from its distribution business by 7 percent during the June quarter, with total bookings up 8.2 percent. Profits rose 21 percent excluding extraordinary items, while total revenue rose 10.4 percent to €674 million (US$822 million), including distribution revenue of €499 million (US$609 million). Net profit fell 5.1 percent to €89.5 million (US$109 million). Total bookings reached 112.6 million despite a 2.1 percent drop in non-air bookings. "Low-cost carrier bookings in the second quarter of 2010 from agencies using Amadeus increased by 35.5 percent compared with the same quarter in 2009," the company stated.

United Airlines and Continental Airlines said they expect their proposed merger to close by 1 October after the U.S. Department of Justice ended its antitrust investigation. DOJ indicated that a deal by United/Continental to lease gates and facilities at Newark to Southwest Airlines "resolves ... principal concerns regarding the competitive effects" of the tie-up. Continental and United pledged to "continue to serve all the communities both airlines currently serve. The slot pair transfer is expected to have minimal impact on combined carrier's route network."

The Star Alliance partners on 23 August began code sharing on Continental flights between Newark and Athens, and on "selected flights operated by Aegean Airlines in Europe."

The number of first and business class airline passengers in June increased 16.6 percent worldwide versus a year earlier, marking a seventh consecutive month of growth, according to the International Air Transport Association. "Adjusting for the temporary impact of the European airspace closures shows that premium travel was expanding at an annualized rate of 9 percent in the second quarter, while economy travel expanded at an annualized rate of percent," IATA reported. "Transpacific and Europe-Far East continue to show strength on the back of business travel generated by strong Asian economic growth. Transatlantic travel, with the weak European economies at one end, continues to underperform."
